WHAT'S NEW ON THE SHELVES? (And there's a ton of it...something for everyone!)

1. NUMBERS by Rachel Ward

Since the day her mother died, Jem has known about numbers.  Numbers that pop into her head when she looks into someone's eyes.  They're dates, those numbers.  Date predicting, with brute accuracy, each person's death.  Burdened by such knowledge Jem avoids relationships.  Until she meets Spider, another outsider, and takes a chance.  Maybe they can find happiness together, if only in the brief time that remains before his expiration date.  But on a trip to London, Jem foresees a chilling chain of events:  The city's a target; The clock's running out; The countdown i on to a blowup!

Okay, so maybe Shelby's made a few mistakes with boys lately (how was she supposed to know Wes had "borrowed" that Porsche?).  But her stepmother totally overreacts when she catches Shelby in a post-curfew kiss with a hot senior; suddenly Shelby's plans for the summer are on the shelf and she's being packed away to wilderness camp.  Things start looking up, though, when she meets fellow camper Austin Bridges III.  She soon realizes, however, that there is more to Austin than crush material - his family holds a dark secret and he wants Shelby to help guard it.  Shelby knows she really shouldn't get tangled up with another bad boy...but who is she to turn her back on a guy in need, especially such a good-looking one?  One thing's for sure:  the full moon is about to get her into loads of trouble.

4.  THE LAST SUMMER OF THE DEATH WARRIORS by Francisco X. Stork

When Pancho arrives at St. Anthony's home, he knows his time there will be short.  If all goes as planned he will soon be arrested for the murder of his sister's killer.  But then he's assigned to help D.Q. whose brain cancer hasn't slowed his spirit or his mouth.  D.Q. tells Pancho about his Death Warrior's Manifesto which will help him live out his last days to the fullest, particularly with the love of beautiful Marisol.  As Pancho tracks down his sister's murderer he falls under the influence of both D.Q. and Marisol.  Now he must make a decision:  to honor his sister's death or embrace the way of the Death Warrior and choose life.


5.  BAD APPLE by Laura Ruby

High School junior Tola Riley has green hair, a nose ring, an attitude problem and a fondness for fairy tales, which are a great escape from real life.  Everyone thinks she's crazy; everyone says so.  Everyone except Mr. Mymer, her art teacher.  He gets her paintings and lets her hang out in the art room during lonely lunch periods.  Then the rumors start flying and Tola is suddenly the center of a scandal.  The whole town is judging her - even her own family.  When Mr. Mymer is suspended for what everyone thinks is an affair, she has no choice but to break her silence.  Fairy tales won't help her this time...so how can she tell the truth?  And more importantly, will anyone believe her?


6.  JUMPING OFF SWINGS by Jo Knowles

Ellie remembers how the boys kissed her.  Touched her.  How they begged for more.  And when she gave it to them she felt loved.  For awhile anyway.  So when Josh, a shy eager virgin with a troubled life, leads her from a party to the backseat of his van, Ellie follows willingly.  She thinks this one might be the one, but once their "one-time thing" is over Josh returns to the party and behaves just like the rest.  Unfortunately this time Ellie gets pregnant.  Josh reacts with shame and heartbreak and their confidantes, Corrinne and Caleb have to deal with their own rush of emotions.  Whatever Ellie chooses to do, these four teenagers will all have to grow up a little faster as a result, and leave their innocence behind.

New to town, Beatrice is expecting her new best friend to be one of the girls she meets on the first day.  But instead the alphabet conspires to seat her next to Jonah, aka Ghost Boy, a quiet loner who hasn't made a friend since third grade.  Something about him however gets to Bea and soon they form an unexpected friendship.  It's not romance exactly but it's definitely love.  Still Bea can't quite dispel Jonah's doom and gloom - and as she finds out his family history she finds out why.  Can she help Jonah or is he doomed to vanish forever?

Everyone has a secret.  But Lucy's is bigger and dirtier than most.  On the outside she has a best friend and a love interest, a relatively normal life for a sixteen-year-old girl.  However, one day she comes home to find her mother dead and the very real possibility that her dirty little secret will come out in the open.  Now she has 24 hours to clean up the mess - literally - before her secret is discovered.

10. FAT CAT by Robin Brande

Cat - smart, sassy, and funny - but thin she is not.  Until her science project.  That's when she winds up doing an experiment - on herself.  Before she knows it, Cat is living - and eating - like the hominids, our earliest human ancestors.  True, no chips and no TV is a bummer, and no car is a pain, but healthful eating and walking do have their benefits.  As the pounds drop off, the guys pile on.  All this new male attention is enough to drive a girl crazy!  If only she wasn't so busy hating Matt McKinney to notice....


11. SPHINX'S PRINCESS  by Esther Friesner
