Sheridan County Public Libraries: Dynamic Gateways for Lifelong Learning      September 2, 2010

Story Library News

New Lights and New Book Drop

The Library Board recently hired local electrician Dustin Quillen (of Quillen Electrical Contracting at 307-670-3701) to update the lights in the main room, children's room and office. The flourescent light bulbs we had previously were replaced with "canned" lights, giving a much softer look. The lights shine more directly on the books too, which is very nice. We also have track lighting above the display area for our new items! We are thrilled with the new look!

The Sheridan Library Foundation funded the purchase of a new book drop for the Story Library, which replaced one that was rusting out around the bottom. The Story Library Board put the new one in place. We're excited about this new addition too!

Woodcarvers of the Big Horns @ Story Library

On Saturday, July 10th, the Woodcarvers of the Big Horns met at the Story library from 9:00-noon. They worked on their carvings at that time and the public was invited to stop in and watch them carve! Their carvings will be on display from the 10th through the end of the month!

Viewing of The Living Matrix

Local resident, Paula Morgan would like to invite all those interested to a showing of the movie, The Living Matrix: A Film on the New Science of Healing on Tuesday, July 27th from 6:00-7:30. On the cover, it is stated that "In the film, researchers and practitioners reveal the scientific theories behind alternative healings and offer their perspectives on how these new concepts may shift the future of health care." It also states that "You'll discover the intricate web of factors that determine our well-being." There will be time for a discussion following the movie.

Grant awarded to Story Library!

During National Library Week, we were able to invite Montana Poet/Author, B.J. Buckley, to Story to teach a bookmaking class, conduct a Writers' Workshop, and teach the Story School children about poetry! She also worked with a group of writers in Sheridan! These activities were supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts!

We were thrilled to have 10 participants attend the bookmaking class at the Story Library! Those that attended had a wonderful time creating two different books out of the beautiful assortment of papers B.J. provided! After the school children created a group poem with B.J., she taught them how to fold origami frogs and then gave each of them a lily pad shaped booklet for their original poetry creations. The 19 writers that showed up at the Story Library for the Writers' Workshop participated in several creative writing activities and then shared their writing with the group. The Range Writers, a group that meets on a regular basis at the Sheridan Library practiced several writing techniques with B.J. as well. It was an extremely successful week of activities! Check out some of the pictures taken during those events shown below!

Book Give-Away!

When Craig Johnson (shown below) donated over 100 mysteries to the Story Library, there were 13 duplicates of books we already had in our collection, so we had a drawing for a Book Give-Away during National Library Week. The 13 people whose names were drawn were thrilled! Thanks again, Craig, for you wonderful generosity!

Memorial Donations

We received donations to the Story Library in memory of our dear departed friends, Thelma and Roger Bent Sr. Both, sadly to say, passed away. Some of the items we've purchased with the memorial funds are listed below.

We hope you'll be able to stop in and check out these great books, (both large and regular print), audio CD books, MP3 Playaways and DVDs. We were able to purchase these items because of the Bents' thoughtful family and friends. We thank you all for your generosity and send our deepest sympathies for your loss.
