Battle of the Books for 4th & 5th Grade Students
Battle of the books is a team based program with goals of encouraging reading for enjoyment and broadening reading interests. Teachers and Librarians will organize teams, with 4-5 students per team. The teams will then read books from the book list to prepare for the quiz-bowl-style book battles. The answer during a book battle is always the title of the book and the author.Each team participates in two battles held within the school. Michelle Havenga (SCFPL Children's Librarian) will coordinate the scheduling and travel to schools to hold the preliminary rounds. The eight teams with the most total points after the first and second rounds advance to the semi-finals. The scoring begins anew in both the semi-final and final rounds. The top two scoring teams in the semi-final round will advance to the finals.
Each battle will take approxinately 20 minutes and consist of 20 questions. Teams will have one minute to answer. The teams captain must answer with the correct title and author's full name. If an incorrect answer is given the other team has 15 seconds to "steal" by giving the correct title.
